Theoretical aspects of media image formation, typology and characteristic features
Resumo
this article examines in detail the theoretical foundations of the formation of a media image as one of the key elements in the context of the modern information society. The media image is a complex and multifaceted phenomenon that encompasses both traditional and modern digital media formats. These formats are the result of significant changes in communication processes and technologies, which, in turn, affects the perception of information in modern society. The article highlights the main theoretical approaches to the detailed analysis of the media image, including its socio-cultural, psychological and philosophical aspects. It is important to note that each of these aspects plays a key role in understanding the media image as a phenomenon. Special attention is paid to the typology of media images, where various categories are viewed through the prism of their cognitive impact on the audience, which allows for a deeper understanding of how media formats shape public opinion and perception of reality. This study provides an extensive review of existing scientific and theoretical provisions, as well as author's conclusions. As a result of the work, an analysis of how media images influence the formation of identity, social relations and cultural changes in the modern world is carried out.

Linguocultural features of modern Scottish detective stories in translation into Russian
Resumo
the article is devoted to the study of linguocultural features of modern Scottish detective stories and their translation into Russian. The focus is on the works of Ian Rankin. The aim of the work was to identify the key linguocultural markers of Scottish detective stories and analyze their translation strategies. The author examines the main difficulties in translating nationally marked vocabulary and notes that the use of certain translation strategies to preserve the national specificity of the Scottish detective novel is due to the lack of equivalents for Scottish realities; the need for comments to explain the context; the importance of maintaining a balance between authenticity and comprehensibility.

The rendition of precedent phenomena in the translation of Jennifer Egan's novel «A Visit from the Goon Squad»
Resumo
this article is devoted to the analysis of translation strategies used in the transfer of precedent phenomena in the Russian translation of Jennifer Egan's novel «A Visit from the Goon Squad». The aim of the study is to identify the main methods of translation of precedence used by the translator to adapt culturally significant elements of the text to the Russian-speaking audience. To achieve this goal, the following objectives were addressed: classifying the precedent phenomena found in the novel into four categories (precedent names, precedent texts, precedent statements, and precedent situations); identifying the main translation strategies used in conveying each category of precedent phenomena; evaluating the effectiveness of the selected strategies in terms of adequacy and acceptability for the target audience. The study identified the most frequently used strategies, such as transliteration, calquing, adaptation, descriptive translation, as well as combined approaches incorporating elements of various strategies. Particular attention is paid to instances where the translator deviates from the literal rendering of a precedent phenomenon, replacing it with an analogue more comprehensible to a Russian-speaking audience. The results of the research can be used in the practice of teaching translation theory and practice, in the training of literary translators, as well as for conducting further research in the field of intercultural communication and linguoculturology. The article is of interest to researchers dealing with the problems of literary text translation, as well as to a wide range of readers interested in the work of Jennifer Egan and issues of intercultural exchange.

The universal character of elliptical one member answers in question-and-answer dialogical unities in modern languages of the world
Resumo
this article examines one of the most common, universal phenomena of sentence syntax. The authors explore the problem of ellipsis, reflecting many fundamental problems of the syntactic level of modern world languages. In the article, the authors consider only the one-member structure of elliptical response sentences in a dialogical unity, which, despite its fragmentation, is semantically sufficient and universal in the world's languages with different structures. The classification of these linguistic structures is carried out in accordance with the morphological character of the key component. The substantive, pronominal, adverbial, and adjectival one member structures of elliptical response sentences in the dialogical unities of various languages, as well as those expressed by the words "yes" and "no" are investigated.

The role of syntactic means in characterization of characters (on the example of M.L. Stepnova's novel "The Garden")
Resumo
this article analyzed the main syntactic means of expression used in M.L. Stepnova’s novel “The Garden”: parcellation, segmentation, repetition, anaphora, epiphora, rhetorical question, ellipsis. The most frequent and striking are the expressively colored repetitions used in creating the speech characteristics of the characters. The author actively uses the space of dialogues as a basis for expressing the character’s internal state, his personal qualities and behavioral characteristics. Also, the similar frequency of using the above syntactic tools indicates a tendency of informative conciseness in modern Russian.

Linguistic features of informal student online discourse (a study based on Italian and French)
Resumo
the aim of this study is to analyze and identify the linguistic and stylistic features of informal student online discourse based on periodic publications by students from France and Italy within two thematic online communities during 2024. The paper begins by defining university discourse as used in the research, followed by a general theoretical characterization of student discourse as a distinct type of discourse within university communication. Examples and brief descriptions of domestic and international studies on the topic are presented, highlighting the scarcity of such research and thereby confirming the relevance of the present study. Students are considered as a phenomenon of group linguistic identity, whose speech reflects current language trends. A comparative analysis of the empirical material is conducted, including the categorization of all texts into thematic groups; a detailed quantitative analysis of the identified linguistic and stylistic features in the communities of both countries; the identification of the most frequent markers of this discourse type; and the detection of specific linguistic characteristics unique to these student communities. The final result of the linguistic analysis of textual publications from the two accounts is the identification of concrete linguistic and stylistic similarities and differences in this type of student online discourse, which confirms its distinctive status within university discourse.

Comparative study of linguistic gaps using examples of English and Russian verbs
Resumo
the article considers a comparative analysis of linguistic lacunae. The differences between the linguistic and cultural features of the Russian and English languages are analyzed, and ways to resolve discrepancies are studied. The article provides a definition of the terms "lacuna" and "absolute lacunae". The directions for studying the term "lacuna" are highlighted based on narrow and broad approaches. The article analyzes the directions of studying the term "lacuna" and specifies criteria for attributing lacunae from the point of view of English and Russian languages to absolute lacunae. The practical examples given by the author clearly demonstrate the principle of substitution of English and Russian verbs to highlight the lacunary properties of the word. The systems for determining the differentiation of lacunary words in the studied languages are identified and the characteristic features of absolute and lexical lacunae are described. Lexical absolute lacunae are studied from the point of view of history and ways of application in other languages. Lexical lacunae are considered by the author of the article from the point of view of the barrier of two languages and the violation of mutual communication between them. The opinion of E.A. Tarasova on the topic of active-emotional verbs and ways of their use in English is analyzed. The occurrence of lexical and grammatical gaps is studied. The author of the article compares the point of view of constructing the syntactic basis of the word by A. Vezhbitskaya and his own, on the basis of this comparison the conclusions are formulated. The research methodology is presented by the author of the article in the form of an analysis of scientific works by Russian researchers on the issue under discussion, and methods of analysis, synthesis, and comparison are also used to identify and study lexical gaps in English and Russian. The results of the scientific work are presented in the form of a scientific review of the linguistic lacunae of the two languages.

A study of response strategies in question-response interaction in Chinese diplomatic discourse under the perspective of conversation analysis
Resumo
based on the relevant concepts in the theory of Conversation Analysis, this study takes as its corpus the Chinese materials of the three lectures and seminars on the South China Sea held by Ambassador Liu Xiaoming during his visit to the United Kingdom, in which he responded to the questions of the audience. The study explores Chinese foreign ministry ambassadors' response strategies and specific linguistic realizations on issues related to national territory and security. It is found that Liu Xiaoming, the ambassador of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, adopts affirmative response and conflictual response respectively in answering reporters' questions on the South China Sea issue, in which the basic discourse step in affirmative response consists of agreeing with the point of view ? stating the position ? authoritatively legitimizing the argument ? stating the attitude; and the basic discourse step in the conflictual response strategy can be summarized as the central phrase (mostly negativity, refusal + opposition) ? stating the position / elaborating the information ? authoritatively / narratively / rationally (de-legitimization) ? offer hope/demand/suggestion. This study helps to integrate the theory of discourse analysis with diplomatic discourse, aiming to provide a reference for the interpretation of Chinese diplomatic discourse.

Stratigraphy of Nabokov?s syntax: on the essence of the stylistic device of Vladimir Nabokov
Resumo
the article is devoted to one of the features of Nabokov's style – complex sentences of complex construction – in the psycholinguistic aspect. Such optics makes it possible to see that Nabokov’s complex sentences differ from constructively similar sentences of other writers in a semantic sense: at the boundaries of predicative units, transitions occur between levels or, when viewed three-dimensionally, registers of consciousness, which in terms of the philosophy of literature correspond to possible worlds. These transitions in Nabokov's texts are not marked by lexical or grammatical items (the so-called transition operators) and therefore turn out to be obscured, which causes pleasure in the attentive reader, but makes the inattentive reader get lost between the real and the unreal, the present and the past, wakefulness and sleep. Perhaps the solution to this technique associated with syntax gives researchers the key to a generalization of the description of Nabokov's style, in which elliptical elements are represented quite widely.

A comparative study of syntactic features of translated language and original language: a case study of Chinese and Russian novels
Resumo
the translated language differs from the source and target languages and is called the 'third code', possessing unique characteristics. In this article, using four classical works from China and Russia as examples, a comparative analysis of 13 indicators is carried out to study the linguistic features of the original Chinese, translated Chinese, original Russian and translated Russian languages. The results show that at the lexical level: 1) at the sentence level, the average dependency distance in the translated language is greater than in the original; 2) at the phrase level, the differences in the average phrase length and the number of phrases per sentence between the translated and original languages are more noticeable, the common features are less pronounced; 3) at the collocation level, the proportion of binary, trinary and low-frequency collocations in the original language is higher than in the translated language. The study shows that the translated language, when subjected to human processing, has syntactic features that are different from the original language.

Features of translation of J.K. Rowling's works into Russian and French (based on the book «Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire»)
Resumo
this article analyzes the features of translating J.K. Rowling's novel «Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire» into Russian and French. The focus is on three key aspects that address the challenges of translation and contribute to a deeper understanding of its strategy. The first aspect of the research is devoted to identifying the elements that cause difficulties in translating the works about Harry Potter in general. This includes not only linguistic problems but also deeper semantic nuances. The second aspect of the study focuses on the representation of the French accent in the original text and the ways it is conveyed in the Russian and French translations. The difference in approaches is highlighted here. While in the Russian translation it is sufficient to indicate the accent, the French translator faced the challenge of conveying the accent in a way that is understandable to French readers without seeming artificial. The third aspect of the research is devoted to the translation of proper names. This is one of the most challenging tasks. It is especially difficult to translate proper names that carry a certain thematic meaning.

Peculiarities of the Tatar language in China and the threat of its extinction
Resumo
language contact constitutes a significant external factor influencing language evolution. While linguistic interactions are typically bidirectional, minority languages are more susceptible to interference from dominant languages, resulting in variations across phonological, lexical, and grammatical dimensions. The Tatar ethnic group in China, recognized as one of the nation's smallest minority populations, has maintained close historical ties with the Han, Uyghur, and Kazakh communities. Over time, their language has assimilated substantial linguistic elements from these neighboring groups, evolving into a distinct hybrid form of Tatar language. During the 1980s and 1990s, the Tatar language faced critical endangerment, though recent decades have witnessed a gradual mitigation of its endangered status. Interethnic marriage has emerged as both a primary catalyst for the hybrid characteristics of Tatar language and a crucial factor in its survival despite endangerment. Based on field research data, this study systematically examines the hybrid features of Tatar language across phonological, grammatical, lexical, and semantic dimensions, while analyzing the language's endangered status, its recent mitigation, and contributing factors through the lens of language usage patterns.

On the issue of distinguishing adverbs and particles (using the example of the word «bukvalno»)
Resumo
the article is devoted to the actual problem of distinguishing particles and adverbs as grammatical classes of words in the Russian language, the genetic and functional-semantic connections of which determine the permeability of boundaries between them in certain areas, which leads to the existence of multifunctional, homonymous, hybrid units. This issue is considered using the example of the functioning of a multifunctional word “bukvalno” in various syntagmatic and contextual conditions. The criteria for distinguishing the adverbial and particular realizations of this unit are systematized. The author identifies and analyzes the usages of this word, the grammatical qualification of which is difficult. The grammatical status of a word is justified “bukvalno” as a functional unit – a particle – in cases of expressing the meaning ‘in the literal sense of the word’, as well as intonation and punctuation design of this unit by the type of an insertion or parcel component. The article proves the possibility of the functioning of the research object as a hybrid word, which has a set of some formal features inherent in the adverb, and at the same time expresses a communicative and pragmatic meaning in conditions of uncharacteristic compatibility for the adverb. The results of the research can be used to study the functioning of other units that have a multifunctional or hybrid nature and are involved in the processes of pragmaticalization, grammaticalization, and particularization in modern Russian.

The lexical aspect of the opposition "light – darkness" in the English-language newspapers "The Times", "The New York Times"
Resumo
this article examines the light – dark opposition based on two leading English-language newspapers, "The Times" and "The New York Times". The main focus is on the analysis of the lexical unit’s light and darkness, which are considered both directly and figuratively. We have observed the variety of examples of these lexical units in both direct and figurative meanings. In addition, differences in the frequency of use of the specified vocabulary were revealed. The relevance of the work is due to the lack of elaboration of issues related to the multidimensional study of lexical units in oppositional relations, as well as the functioning of oppositions in a journalistic text. The purpose of the study is to study the lexical aspect of the "light – dark" opposition in English based on the material of the English-language newspaper editions "The Times" and "The New York Times". Based on this objective, we have outlined specific tasks: to examine different definitions of the term "opposition"; to provide the theoretical, lexical, and semantic justification of the opposition "light – darkness"; to consider the opposition "light – darkness" in a lexical perspective, based on the material of English-speaking newspaper publications "The Times" and "The New York Times".

«The godfire»: religious and philosophical sources of fiery imagery in Cormac McCarthy's «Bloody Meridian» and «The Road»
Resumo
the article examines the functioning of the image of fire and its religious and philosophical sources in the novels «Blood Meridian» and «The Road» by Cormac McCarthy, a contemporary American author. This research material was chosen because in both works, fire is an important symbol that reveals key aspects of the poetics of the novels, and an analysis of the fire imagery and its sources allows us to determine the specifics of the moral and ethical system and metaphysics presented in the novels. In the revisionist Western «Blood Meridian», fire acts as an ontologically unifying and simultaneously destructive element, a foundation of existence associated with war and primordial chaos. In «The Road», the image of fire takes on an ethical and existential significance, symbolizing faith, hope, and the preservation of humanity in a world after a global catastrophe. As a result of the analysis, it was revealed that the fiery imagery in the novels under study is related to ancient Greek philosophy, primarily the teachings of Heraclitus, Christian eschatology, the myth of Prometheus, and Gnostic ideas about evil and salvation. The results of this study can be used in the teaching of American literature history in higher education, as well as for further research on McCarthy's literary works.

Approaches to defining the concept of manipulative discourse in modern linguistics
Resumo
the article is devoted to the analysis of the concept of manipulative discourse and its role in modern communication practices. The authors reveal the evolution of the concept of "manipulation" – from the literal interpretation of "tricks of the hand" to a complex phenomenon of socio-psychological influence, highlighting its key characteristics: hidden influence, focus on changing the perception of the addressee and control over his behavior. The theoretical basis of the study is formed by research in the field of critical discourse analysis by T. van Dijk, the discursive-historical approach of R. Wodak and psycholinguistic developments by E. Dotsenko and A. Danilova, which allows us to consider manipulation simultaneously as a social, cognitive and linguistic phenomenon. Particular attention is paid to Japanese media discourse: the lexical nominations “??”, “?????????”, “???”, the phenomenon of “????” and the exploitation of forms of politeness, which create a favorable environment for hidden influence, are analyzed. Characteristic strategies are identified – framing, appeal to collective values, the use of Anglicisms or traditional concepts. It is shown that the highly contextual nature of Japanese communication enhances the pragmatic potential of implicit messages and “truthfully misleading” speech. The author emphasizes the increase in manipulative practices in the digital age, the growth of interdisciplinary interest in the topic and the need to develop critical media literacy. The conclusion emphasizes the importance of critical perception of information and the need for an interdisciplinary approach to the study of linguistic manipulation in the context of the information society, formulates criteria for distinguishing between legitimate persuasion and illegitimate manipulation, and outlines prospects for further research into the language of power in an intercultural perspective.

On the poetic discourse of the “northern poets” during the formation of the multilateral world order (based on the works of Russian-speaking and English-speaking northern poets of the XX-XXI centuries)
Resumo
the purpose of the research is to study the poetic discourse in the works of the “northern poets” of the XX-XXI centuries and to identify their linguistic and stylistic features. The relevance of the work is due to the fact that the research was conducted in line with modern cognitive developments at the intersection of the following sciences: textual linguistics, linguo-cultural studies, stylistics, cognitive linguistics and literary studies. The novelty of the research lies in the fact that this work examines the literary texts of modern writers, which had not previously been fundamentally studied in the linguistic and poetic aspect. In the theoretical part of the work, the concepts of “writer’s artistic worldview”, “poetic communication” and “poetic discourse” are considered, which cannot be imagined in isolation from the cultural and social context, especially at the present time – the period of formation of the “multipolar world order”, and the main features of poetic speech are also studied. The practical part provides examples of linguistic and poetic analysis of poems by Russian-speaking and English-speaking Northern poets. The results of the study present the main features of poetic discourse identified in the works of these writers. The theoretical significance lies in the development of a methodological basis for linguistic and literary analysis of the poems of Northern poets. In addition, the conducted research has theoretical significance in complete and in-depth understanding of the work of these writers, as well as contributes to the development of general problems of interpretation of the poetic text and opens up broad prospects for further research. The practical significance lies in the fact that the results and materials of the research can be used in the preparation of various courses in stylistics, lexicology, text interpretation, in the development of specialized courses in modern American and Russian poetry, linguistic and cultural studies, as well as in teaching students of making the analysis of literary text and writing project-papers and theses. In addition, these materials can also be used in the preparation of classes on moral, spiritual and patriotic education of young people.
