Pasolini’s View on the Free-Indirect Speech in the Italian Narrative

Abstract

The article is dedicated to the 100th anniversary of Pier Paolo Pasolini, who is known for his essays, including linguistic ones. Two of them are considered in the article in the context of Pasolini's general historical and philosophical views on the grammatical construction of free-indirect speech. His main ideas are highlighted and their significance for the interpretation of the free-indirect speech in the Italian narrative by the method of contextual analysis is determined.

Precedent Name as a Means of Creating Media Image in French and English Mass Media (corpus-based approach)

Abstract

The article focuses on the comparative analysis of similar lexico-grammatical constructions in French and English, which have a precedent name of a popular contemporary political leader as a model. The combination of construction grammar analysis, attentional shift and corpus data enables us to make conclusions about the similarities and differences of French and English precedent names functioning as the models in media discourse.

Mechanisms of Interaction of Verbal and Musical Text of Psalms in Multimodal Liturgical Discourse

Abstract

The article considers mechanisms of interaction of verbal means of implementing the dominant speech strategy of praising God and related communicative strategies of liturgical discourse. The verbal text as a component of multimodal communication is compared with musical applications. The conclusion is made about the close relationship of verbal markers and musical language instruments as manifestations of the emotionality of liturgical discourse.

The given article considers the issue of phonetical layout of the word ‘sweatshirt’, the latter having been loaned from English into Russian. Analyzing the reasons for this borrowing, the authors contemplate why this lexical unit, having entered the casual usage of the Russian language, underwent such kind of alterations, what are the peculiarities of its perception, and why it demonstrates certain phonetical transformations in the recipient language.

The article looks into the cases of ambiguity in legal texts including lexical and syntactic ambiguity. Ambiguity itself is an integral part of any language that can be traced at different levels: lexical, grammatical and syntactic. Avoidance of the abovementioned cases of ambiguity is possible through context which helps to lift the problem of misunderstanding and false interpretation of legal texts.

Midsommar, Medelsvensson and the Role of Background Knowledge in the Translator’s Work

Abstract

The article deals with the role of background knowledge in the perception and translation of works of fiction and especially of works of poetry. The object of the study is a poem by the contemporary Swedish poet Malte Persson Sju sorters blommor - en midsommardikt. In order to translate such a text it is necessary to analyze it thoroughly as a whole and define the prevailing emotion and meaning. While analyzing a poetic text it is useful to apply the system invented by the Swedish translator Augustin Mannerheim.

The article is devoted to the problem of grammaticalization and bound name formation in Modern Korean. One of the mechanisms of grammaticalization is generalization of meaning. In the formation of Korean bound names from nouns, there may be a transition 1) from spatial to temporal meaning, 2) from concrete object to abstract, 3) from concrete object to abstract situation, 4) from concrete object to the expression of cause.

The article treats some features of translator-interpreter work with texts potentially created for the purpose of speech manipulation and containing expressions that can be regarded as means of verbal aggression; a theoretical justification for the classification of these means is provided. Danish Linguopragmatics as a Reflection of the Danish Mentality

The article discusses how the Danish cultural mentality, reflected in the dansk fællesskab concept, influences subjective linguo-pragmatic meanings, expressed by the analytical means of the Danish language. Phonosemantics and Its Possible Modern Interpretation

Abstract

The article presents the results of an experimental study of phonosemantics. The phonosemantic study included two experiments: a survey of subjects (informants) and an analysis of the phonosemantic features of the prayers “Our Father” and “Hail Mary…” in Russian, Serbian and Greek based on a special program in the Python 3 programming language. A clear connection was established between the plane of expression and the plane of content for the languages under study. The results of the study of these Orthodox prayers make it possible to suggest the conscious use of certain techniques to create an emotional impact on the listener, which is especially evident in Greek prayers. In the study, sound is defined as a spoken-language correlate of the phonemes of a particular language.

Abstract

Sentiment analysis is the process of analyzing the emotional tonality of fragments of text or speech. According to the approach used, the classification of emotions consists of two stages. At the first stage, the text is divided into discursive units according to the Hearst method, and the emotion of each discursive unit is determined based on the frequency of emotional words contained in this unit. At the second stage, work is carried out with sentences in which an emotion appears, and the emotion of each sentence is classified by a method suitable for this type of sentence.

Scientific Translation from Russian into English: A Case in 18th Century History

Abstract

The article introduces to scholars the English translation, dating back to 1764, of the Russian scientific work by S. P. Krasheninnikov “The Description of Kamchatka”, published in St. Petersburgh in 1755. The study of the translation act and its strategy has revealed that James Grieve, the translator, was carrying out the task, set by the British government, who viewed Kamchatka as a strategically important point on the way to America.

The Swedish Modal Particle ju as a Means of Cohesion and Coherence in Dialogic Texts

Abstract

The particle ju is the most common modal particle in the Swedish language. It is used in in a wide variety of dialogic contexts and has various pragmatic meanings and functions. This article focuses on the particle’s ability to connect utterances and dialogic turns, thus insuring dialog cohesion and coherence. A conclusion is drawn that the main function of the particle in question is anaphoric.

The article gives an overview of the basic sociolinguistic characteristics of dialects in German speaking Switzerland; the dialect is defined as an essential feature of the national identity of German speaking Swiss. Further to that the article analyzes the significance of certain current trends of social development for changes in the dialect landscape of German speaking Switzerland; it is concluded that currently an erosion of traditional diglossia is occurring. Main trends and further development potential of Alemannic dialects in Switzerland are revealed.

Reception of Old Norse Mythology in Modern Icelandic Poetry: the Case of “Blóðhófnir” by Gerður Kristný Guðjónsdóttir

Abstract

The article is a case-study of reception of the Old Icelandic literary heritage in the Icelandic literature of the late 20th-21st centuries. The poem “Blóðhófnir” by Gerður Kristný is based on the Eddaic plot of Freyrs wooing to Gerður. The authors strategy in handling Old Norse myths has the result, that interpreting the already existing plot grows into creating a completely new one, its connection to the Old Icelandic literature becomes weaker, but its universality moves to the forefront.

The purpose of the paper is to define the place and the Russian theme in the fictional world of the novel „Landscape Painted with Tea“. The study is carried out by using the methods of close reading, intertextual and comparative analyses. A conclusion was made that the novel „Landscape Painted with Tea“ is a literary representation of M. Pavich’s panslavistic viewpoint which was represented with the intertextual references to Russian literature classics of the 19th century compounded of Russian historical cultural motives.

Celebrities as Flagships of the Introduction of Socio-Cultural Trends in Society

Abstract

The phenomenon of celebrity is being actively studied within the framework of celebrity studies. The most efficient in terms of the influence, in the author’s opinion, are achieved celebrities (according to Chris Rojek’s classification), who have gained stardom thanks to their talent and creativity. The power of communication impact exerted by celebrities in building interaction with the target audience contributes to the transmission and support of the introduction of socio-cultural trends that serve as the driving forces of socio-cultural dynamics. Achieved celebrities are most efficient in the role of early followers or early majority according to the innovation curve, when a socio-cultural trend tends to reach the peak of popularity with their help.

Abstract

The article continues the analysis of the theme of St. Petersburg in the works of I. Brodsky, started by the authors in the previous publication. The image of St. Petersburg, which forms the basis of the poetic universe of I. Brodsky, brings the poet to general cultural analogies. The formation of St. Petersburg falls on the epoch of classicism, when Russian poetry was born there. The classical orientation to antiquity laid the core of Russian poetry, first of all, in St. Petersburg. So, through the image of his hometown, there is a mental return of the poet himself there.
