Verbalization of Sensory Experience and Data Analysis: Building Statistical Models

Baryshnikov P.N., Velis L.A.

Abstract

The article examines the olfactory vocabulary in the works of V.V. Nabokov and F.M. Dostoevsky using computational linguistics methods. The aim of the work is to identify the dominant factor in the descriptions of olfactory experience: language structure or individual authorial style. The material was collections of stories by both authors, analyzed using spaCy, NLTK and pymorphy3 libraries. A significant  difference in the nature of olfactory descriptions was revealed: Nabokov’s descriptions are dominated by descriptive characteristics with a wide range of odor sources, while Dostoevsky’s are dominated by emotionally charged metaphorical images of predominantly negative connotations.

The main method of comparative analysis of 19 phraseological units revealed a tendency toward structural compression: 68.4% of idioms in Russian Sign Language are represented by integral visual signs. Complete correspondence of figurative concepts was established in both language systems, along with a high degree of lexical equivalence (84.2% of cases). The results confirm the stability of conceptual-semantic connections between the phraseological systems of Russian and Russian Sign Language, despite differences in their structural organization.

Trilingualism of the Eadwine Psalter

Mukhin S.V., Morozova E.B.

Abstract

Drawing on the 12th century Eadwine Psalter, thе present research examines the typological shift of European languages within the context of medieval England’s trilingualism. In contrast to the literal approach and conservatism of the Old English interlinear gloss, the Anglo-Norman translation demonstrates a departure from the synthetic morphosyntactic structure of the source text to certify a typological shift to analytic alignment. By putting a number of linguistic phenomena to comparative analysis the study establishes that Old French demonstrated innovation in advancing the transition to an analytic typology. This observation is especially relevant, given Anglo-Norman’s high sociolinguistic status as the dominant language of Medieval England’s elite.

Robin Hood in the Mirror of the Reformation: Transformation of the Image During the Elizabethan and Jacobean Eras

Kolosova E.I.

Abstract

In light of the traditional view of Robin Hood as a symbol of the Yeomanry, the idea of his noble origins at the end of the Elizabethan era and the beginning of the Jacobean era deserves further exploration. Using comparative historical and literary-historical methods, this article attempts to identify the reasons for such a radical transformation of this image by examining two plays by the English playwright Anthony Munday (1560–1633) – The Downfall of Robert, Earl of Huntington (1601) and The Death of Robert, Earl of Huntington (1601). By making Robin Hood the central figure of these plays, the playwright not only honored his first mentor but also highlighted the enduring universality of this image within a historical context, while using it as a lens to explore the urgent issues of his era.
