Skeptouchoi in the Caucasus and the Northern Black Sea region in the ancient era

Vdovchenkov E., Voskresenskiy A.

摘要

Among the terms used by ancient authors for barbarian rulers is the term skeptouchoi. This article raises the problem of the content of this term to characterize the barbaric societies of the Northern Black Sea region and the Caucasus. Strabo reports on skeptouchoi in the Pre-Caucasus and skeptouchoi in Colchis. Skeptouchoi are known in Tacitus' description of the Sarmatian raid on Transcaucasia, they are also mentioned in the decree of the Protogenes of the second half of the III century BC – the beginning of the II century AD, which tells about the tributary relations of Olbia and the Sayy tribe. Of particular importance is the information of Strabo, where he speaks about two levels of power. The presence of such a form of political organization as chiefdom in these societies has been established. The article also analyzes the archaeological situation in the Northwestern Caucasus and Colchis. It is concluded that the ancient authors, speaking of skeptouchoi, meant regional rulers, often subordinate to rulers of a higher level – czars.

The travelogue of Robert Porter as a primary source on studying the Caucasus image visualisation by the Europeans in the first decades of XIX c.

Tkachenko D.

摘要

The paper focuses on the analysis of the travel notes by the famous British artist and traveller Robert Ker Porter, who visited the North Caucasus on the trip to the Middle East in 1817-1820. The travelogue full text has not been translated into Russian yet and is being introduced to Russian scientific public for the first time. Its author became one of the first English travellers who discovered the exotic land and its inhabitants in the English-speaking public, whose vivid images are still in use in the English-speaking sector of Caucasian studies. The article points out the Orientalist nature of the Caucasus people's descriptions: the Cossacks, Kalmyks, Kabardians, Chechens and Ossetians, with whom the author of the travel notes had contacted, but mainly conveyed a set of well-established Eurocentric stereotypes, filling them with vivid regional details. The travelogue also reflects the nature of the traveller’s relations with the Imperial authorities in the region, contains sketches of the daily life of the settlements and frontier dwellers. The author concludes the “dualistic” vision of the Caucasus by the traveller: the admiration for nature and mountains fancifully mixed with the fear of being captured by the inhabitants of the foothills.

A case study for the institutional management of the Caucasus studies in Russian Empire

Kolosovskaya T.

摘要

This article discusses the history of the scientific institutions functioning established in the second half of the XIX century in Caucasus to study it. Particular attention is paid to the role of the military department in the construction of the institutional space in Caucasian studies, which is little studied in historiography. Attention is drawn to the participation of the military in the work of the Caucasian Department of the Imperial Russian Geographical Society (IRGO), as well as to the main directions and results of the Military History Department activities at the headquarters of the Caucasian Military District. Based on the works of pre-revolutionary authors, as well as documents from the Russian State Military Historical Archive, it is concluded that the military administration of the Caucasus took an active part in organizing the scientific study of the region. Representatives of the local headquarters occupied leading positions in the Caucasian department of the IRGS. Some military men became active participants in the geographical, ethnographic and linguistic study of the Caucasus, including I.I. Khodzko, I.I. Stebnitsky, P.K. Uslar, A.V. Komarov. Created at the headquarters of the Caucasian Military District, the Military History Department gained the status of an important scientific and educational center on the Caucasian outskirts of the empire. His research practices formed an empirical basis for further scientific study of the military past of the Caucasus.

Transcaucasian region in tsarist travels: from Alexander II to Nicholas II

Prasolov D.

摘要

The travels of emperors on the national outskirts of the Russian Empire as a representation of power and mastering the symbolic space of multinational state were the means to manage culturally complex communities of the Romanov dynasty servants. The article considers the circumstances of the visits of Alexander II in 1871, Alexander III in 1888, and Nicholas II in 1914 to the South Caucasus. It describes the general characteristics of the routes and scenarios of the highest visits, shows the stability of the principal forms of communication with the local population. The importance of the continuity of the czarevitch’s’ Caucasian journeys in their future practices of ruling the region is emphasized. The commemorative aspects of the czarist visits that actualize in the public consciousness the key events of the Russian history of the Caucasus are investigated. It is noted while observing organizational and ceremonial canon, each visit solved concrete and historical problems determined by the completion of the accession Caucasus to Russia, the development of transport infrastructure and deeper integration of the region into the socio-cultural space of the empire, symbolic mobilization of demographic and material resources of the southern outskirts during the World War I. The reasoned conclusion shows that the visits of the emperors promoted the legitimization in the eyes of the subjects of both the supreme crown authority and its representatives in the face of the authorities of the Caucasian region. “The Highest Visits” deepened the integration of the region into the larger imperial space and, at the same time, contributed to the reintegration of the peoples of the South Caucasus within the Russian state order.

Recent history

"...The question should be presented pointly to the soviet government...". Documents and materials on the history of the administrative and territorial distribution of the Mountain ASSR and the Ka-bardino-Balkar autonomous region in 1922-1924

Dzamikhov K., Kazharov A.

摘要

Autonomous Region, the problem of administrative-territorial delimitation from the Mountain ASSR is crucial. The administrative-territorial process was described by contradictions regarding the ownership of both individual parts of territories and entire settlements. Conducted by the Center until the mid-1920s, resolutions containing various forms of resolving ethnic-territorial contradictions were based on the principle of redistribution of the all-mountain land fund. Here, this meant the need for significant territorial concessions from Kabarda. This circumstance was an important factor that determined the national-political positioning not only of the Kabardian people but also of the Kabardian part of the Soviet leadership of the Kabardino-Balkarian Autonomous Region. In cases that concerned the solution of the ethnic territorial demarcation problems with neighboring peoples, the leadership of Kabardino-Balkaria allowed itself a very tough position in relation to the policy of the Soviet government. The published documents and materials make it possible to understand that the establishment of administrative-territorial boundaries was not an “external” formal support for the process of formation of the Kabardino-Balkarian Autonomous Region, but its essential aspect. In the eyes of the peoples of Kabardino-Balkaria and the elite groups representing them, some or other solutions to ethnic territorial problems created the essence and meaning of autonomy.

Cooperation of the Kabardino-Balkarian branch of the Soviet committee for cultural relations with compatriots abroad with non-governmental organizations of foreign Circassian diasporas in the so-cialistic times (1966-1991)

Kushkhabiev A.

摘要

It was revealed that in 1966-1991 years the Kabardino-Balkarian branch of the Soviet Committee for Cultural Relations with Compatriots Abroad (KBB), with the support of the authorities of Kabardino-Balkarian Republic, conducted activities to promote socialist ideology in foreign Circassian diasporas to increase among them supporters of the USSR and adherents of the socialist system. During the period of perestroika (1985-1991), the work of the KBB comprised explaining to foreign compatriots the essence of reforms in the USSR and attracting investors from among them. The activities and methods used by the KBB turned out to be quite effective: in the foreign Circassian diasporas the share of supporters of the USSR, persons maintaining ties with organizations and citizens of the autonomies of the North Caucasus, members of the communist parties of Syria and Jordan, youth democratic organizations, the Arab Socialist Renaissance Party increased. The activities of the KBB contributed to the strengthening of friendly relations between the USSR and the countries of residence of compatriots, mainly with Jordan and Syria. Contacts (exchanges of delegations and tourist groups, education of youth of foreign compatriots in the universities of the KBASSR, organization of recreation for children of foreign compatriots in pioneer camps and sanatoriums of the republic, systematic correspondence of the KBB and residents of the republic with foreign compatriots) of representatives of foreign Circassian diasporas with their historical homeland, supplies to foreign compatriots of printed, video and audio materials, broadcasting radio programs to the Circassian diasporas in the countries of the Middle East were mainly performed in the Circassian language, which largely contributed to the preservation of the ethno-cultural specifics of the foreign Circassian diasporas. The cooperation of the KBB with non-governmental organizations (NGO) of foreign compatriots also contributed to the study of the Russian language, Russian and Soviet culture by a considerable number of them.

"Circassian" narratives in modern politics of memory in Georgia (2011–2021)

Kirchanov M.

摘要

This study analyzes the Circassian dimension in the modern Georgian politics of memory. The author analyzes the main vectors and trajectories of the development of Circassian narratives in the modern memorial canon of Georgia. The novelty of the study lies in the analysis of the practices and strategies used by Georgian intellectuals within the framework of the functioning of Circassian narratives in the modern memorial canon of Georgia as an element of the politics of memory. The article analyzes 1) the role of political elites and the media in the formation of Circassian narratives in the politics of memory, 2) the features of the performative turn in the historical policy of promoting Circassian images, 3) the role of Circassian narratives in the “wars of memory”. This article shows both the merging and conflict potential of the Circassian dimension in Georgian historical politics. The author analyzes the roles of state authorities and the media as the key participants in the policy of memory and formatters of the memorial canon. It is assumed that the Circassian narratives in the modern memorial canon are predominantly symbolic for solving internal political problems, since external factors minimized the real influence of Georgia in the region. The results of the study show that the Circassian narratives in the Georgian politics of memory became an element of the ideological legitimization of the elites and the promotion of the concept of Georgia’s special role in the Caucasus, as well as the formation of alternative versions of memory to the perception of Circassian images in the Russian historical imagination.

Artistic conflict and the characters of the fairy-tale play "The starstone" by Nelly Lukozheva

Abazov A.

摘要

The article explores the contribution of Nelly Lukozheva to the development of the genre in the Adyghe children’s dramatic tale. Until now, in Adyghe literary criticism, there is no research work on modern children’s literature, and many genres of Adyghe children’s literature and drama are still poorly studied. The appeal of the playwright-librettist Nelly Lukozheva to folklore motives in globalization problems should be considered as a certain trend that has recently been noted in domestic multinational literature. Currently, the genre of literary fairy tale in the Kabardino-Circassian language occupies an important place in modern Adyghe literature. The world of the author’s artistic fairy tales reflects the life philosophy of the author and the moral and ethical norms and laws of society and the state, transmitted through symbols, signs, metaphors and various sentiments. The play-fairy tale “Starstone” by Nelly Lukozheva provides a relevant subject of research, because the author turns his close attention to the cultural, ethnic, lexical and social functions of fairy tales. Therefore, the emergence of recent works of drama makes it possible to touch the spiritual culture of the Adyghe people. Dramatic works as fairy tale plays are of special scientific interest both in theoretical terms and in studying the forms and features of the existence of folklore. The proposed article also draws attention to the presence in the fairy tale play of Nelly Lukozheva of ethnic information at the level of themes, ideas, style and some specific aspects, reveals artistic conflict and gives images of the heroes characteristics in her fairy tale play “Starstone.”

This work tracks the specific manifestations of the writers various hypostases, the peculiarities of the relationship between the author of the depicting and the author of the depicted, the scale of the image of his own image, the "location" that he assigns to his own image in the space and time of the work, emotional contrasts, determining the value vector of the development of events. It is noteworthy that the writer's return to a fragment of his biography once told reveals very significant semantic discrepancies between the two works. The writer could not help but realize that these discrepancies would not escape the attention of his readers. And in these moments, the axiological aspect of the named story and the very fact of returning to the previously illuminated is clarified. The theme of women's fate in the works of T.Z. Tabulov

Chekalov P.

摘要

This article examines the semantic and linguistic features of T.Z. Tabulov’s works of the 1930s, united by the theme of the situation of the mountain woman in pre-revolutionary times. The story “Jalduz” traces the sad fate of the heroine, losing her husband, home, and forced to wander through the forest because of the capture of the village by the tsarist troops. This article thoroughly analyzed the scene of the massacre of a baby, a blind old woman, and Jalduz herself. The author characterizes perpetrators of a brutal execution as soulless killing machines, confirmed by an artistic detail: when describing them, the primary attention focuses on weapons. The story “Fatimat” points at the whole subsequent life of a free girl born is a chain of continuous restrictions, reduced to complete captivity after marriage. The widespread national speech formula “happiness has made its way”, related to the heroine, transformed into its semantic antipode when Musa-Big bought her for a thousand rubles. This notes that it is not the person, but wealth imperiously manages a person’s life, turning it into a continuous drama. The denouement is also eloquent, which not only reproaches, but denounces and rejects the system that destroys an innocent girl in favor of a rich sensualist. The song “Gulya and Fatimat” raises the same theme of disregard for the spiritual needs of the individual, telling about the tragedy of a girl who was forcibly married off to an old and unloved rich man. And here the fate of the daughter is sacrificed to the greed of the parents. In parallel with interpreting texts, this work analyzes the language of the novels, as well as its functions in specific scenes and episodes. This article reveals the author’s skillful mastery of hyperbole, comparison, metaphor, personification, figurative parallel, antithesis. The considered material leads to the conclusion that such a wealth of expressive elements, such an organic fusion of vocabulary, stylistics and psychologism has not been found in any of the Abaza writers not only in the 1930s but also in later decades.
