THE PROBLEM OF TRANSLATING ENGLISH-LANGUAGE MILITARY TERMINOLOGY (the example of the series “The Pacific”)

Vozdvizhenskiy V.V., Mitchell P.J.

Abstract

Mistakes occurring when translating English military terminology in the TV series about war are considered. The demand for high quality translation of such series is explained by continuous development of the movie industry and everlasting popularity of the abovementioned genre in our country. The Pacific, American television series produced by HBO, became the material for analysis. The series focuses on the United States Marine Corps’ actions in the Pacific Theater of Operations within the wider Pacific War. It centers on the experiences of three Marines (Eugene Sledge, Robert Leckie and John Basilone) who were all in different regiments of the 1st Marine Division. A rigorous methodology for differentiation of the categories of the most common mistakes is provided. For this purpose the definitions of translation and series are provided as well as a classification of translation mistakes with four distinctive categories, which is used for sorting examples of the most common mistakes made in the process of translating military terminology in this series. It was shown that some categories contain more sentences with mistakes and examples of the most common translation mistakes are explained. The final point is the conclusion in which it is claimed that those translating the TV series about war usually lack both training in the English and Russian languages, and background knowledge in the sphere of translating English military terminology.

Myakisheva E.A.

Abstract

The relevance of historical-demographic researches is in study of very complex sphere in the history of agrarian (traditional) communities - dynamics of population changes and influence of this process on all social-economical way of life. The changing number and class composition of the population of the provinces and counties of South-Central Russia in 1810-1830 are studied. Discrepancies in the statistical data of different sources, the inability to determine the exact number of class composition fluctuations and dependence of fluctuations in population size from serfdom are detected. The study identified features of demographic processes in various provinces and counties of the large southern region of Central Russia. They appeared mainly in that the areas of the old settlement - Oryol, Ryazan and Tula provinces adjacent to them the Nizhniy Novgorod province - the growth rate of the number of inhabitants has been somewhat alleviated. In the southern most provinces of the region, the Voronezh and Tambov - these rates remained high. Particularly noticeable phenomenon became almost a widespread decline in the number of men in black earth provinces (with the exception of Tambov) after the war of 1812. Ups and downs occurred unevenly among the residents in some villages in the region. But everywhere the high correlation coefficient remains population growth and magnitude of serfdom.

MIGRATION IN RUSSIA/USSR, 1860-1930s AS A PART OF SOCIAL-NATURAL POPULATION CONTROL SYSTEM: METHODS AND BASIC RESEARCH RESULTS

Dyachkov V.L.

Abstract

The necessary sources in this kind of a research are all-Russian and regional E-database of prosopography information embracing over 20 million of people of both sexes born in 1830s - 1944 in all Russian (Soviet) regions and belonging by its origin to each social-estate group. Quantitative and qualitative completeness of sources made it possible to form long (100 years long or over) unbreakable lines of sociography to support a system analysis of crucial limbs of the social synergism including migration dynamics at all population levels from a separate settlement to the all-Russian scale. A causal paradigm of “overpopulation - mass and individual stress - mass and individual aggression” complicated by modernization and social catastrophes factors is taken as a basic factor of migration as a form of a social aggression in the first half of the XX century is considered. Sociographic mass sources’ data processing is revealed as a synergism of the long natural-demographic cycles controlled ups and downs of social activities (aggression) with migration as its part. In general, mass out-migration acted as a factor in a social-natural population control system alongside with the other visible and hidden control factors of this synergism (wartime mortality, social decay, famine, epidemics, exogenous and endogenic infertility, modernity factors).

SOCIAL-DEMOGRAPHIC PHENOMENON OF THE FIRST 100 YEARS OF KOTOVSK POPULATION BEING OF TAMBOV REGION

Dyachkov V.L., Lyamin S.K.

Abstract

It is based on traditional (archival vital statistics, official record, diaries, memoirs) and also on new and original (E-Books of Condolence, genealogies, questionnaires) mass sources of social-demographic information processed in E-database. Some key sides of such a unique social-demographic phenomenon as a Tambov powder factory-town Kotovsk case are analyzed. The synergic set of factors, the sharpest agrarian overpopulation of Tambov region in the early XIX century with the imminent higher social aggression (activities) within the regional population, at maximum highly multi population and multiethnic structure of the first Kotovsk generations, a comparatively high living standard in a brand-new industrial settlement alongside with a traditional family model inertia had been brought to and supported in the interwar Kotovsk in the USSR’s highest fertility rate, birthrate and natural population increase. For the same was taken Kotovsk first decades’ population and displayed one of the highest levels of social impulse and aggression that could be detected by special markers. As Kotovsk population has been accumulating gradually some crucial qualitative and quantitative losses and deformations (heavy human losses in wars and political repression, a transition to a dominant immigration from local rural areas taken together with an emigration of the best segments of home population, a worsening of the ecological pattern at hand with socio-cultural infrastructure stagnation, a transition to a modern family model has overturned the live synergy of the town and has driven Kotovsk demographic indices to the lowest ones in nowadays urban Russia.

ECOFRACTAL-2: MODELING THE INTERACTION BETWEEN NATURE AND SOCIETY OF AGRICULTURAL REGIONS BY MEANS OF FRACTAL GEOMETRY IN THE SECOND HALF OF THE XIX CENTURY

Zhukov D.S., Kanischev V.V., Lyamin S.K.

Abstract

The results of modeling the interaction of an agrarian society and natural environment are discussed. This scientific perspective is relevant in the context of socio-natural history. The objects of the study are eight agricultural provinces of the European part of Russia: Tambov, Ryazan, Penza, Voronezh, Kursk, Orel, Tula, Saratov. The chronological scope of work is the second half of the XIX century. The fractal simulation technology to reconstruct the scenario of development and environmental management strategies is used. The set of indicators used to formalize the controlling factors are considered. The indicator is calculated on the basis of objective data and expert judgment. Modeling led to the following conclusions. Regions differed, as they were at different stages within the same pattern. Different provinces differ only in the degree of approximation to the survival borders. Studied agrarian societies were in a trap: not one of the following changes have led to a positive result. Theoretically, the positive development scenarios (e. g. reducing pressure on the environment) are represented historically unlikely due to the intrinsic properties of agrarian societies. Therefore, societies have chosen to maintain the status quo as the only possible strategy. Further development was possible only as a qualitative reformat the whole system of society-nature relations. This included the introduction of modern agricultural technologies and environmental management.
