Abstract
the article analyzes the features of the formation and functioning of German compound words. It is noted that a significant part of them relates to neoplasms and is related to terminological vocabulary. The most widely used complex nouns and adjectives in the German language. It is not always possible to find an explanation of individual composites in modern dictionaries, as there is an endless process of language enrichment, and it is connected with modern realities. A composite is a monolithic lexical unit that can have a number of meanings and grammatical characteristics. The components of a complex word originate in independent lexemes. They clearly show the relationship between the parts, resembling the relationship between the members of syntactic constructions. They contain various components-words, sometimes whole phrases, and various types of bases. In complex substantives and adjectives of this language, there are full-syllabic, incomplete words, as well as shifts. Semantically, they are characterized by motivation.
