Abstract
The article compares the concepts of new media and social media, which have become engrained in the daily life of common people and public figures. Due to the lack of a precise definition of the term, there is no common opinion about what information technologies can be attributed to the new media.

The article analyzes and reveals the peculiarities of coverage of US presidential election 2016 in the Russian press. It is concluded that the majority of Russian publications positively covered the activities of D. Trump and critically spoke about the campaign of H. Clinton.

The authors conclude that the present deterioration of relations caused by the Ukrainian crisis will not erase growing through the centuries economic and cultural unity of Russia and Europe.
