Ethnocultural analogies in the traditional culture of the Kyrgyz and South Altai people: retrospective analysis of the materials of the russian-kyrgyz ethnological expedition 2022

Asankanov A.

Аннотация

The article opens a section devoted to the problem of ethnocultural ties of the Turkic peoples. Its author describes four phenomena of the traditional culture of the southern Altai people, which were discovered during an ethnological expedition to the Altai Republic. All of them in one form or another are characteristic of the traditional culture of the Kyrgyz. The paper discusses the game chatyrash, which was revived by the Altaians, lost by the Kyrgyz, but it was mentioned in the Kyrgyz epic “Manas”. The second evidence is the ritual of serving ucha – rump, which is the culmination of serving a meal among the Altai peoples and the Kyrgyz, the most honourable dish. However, Kyrgyz people serve it to a wider circle of relatives. The third one is similar traditional methods of butchering a sheep carcass, names of its bones, the order of serving parts of the animal during a meal, and preference of horsemeat. Finally, the Altai word tagyl, recorded during the expedition, allowed the author to put forward a hypothesis about its similarity with the Kyrgyz San-Tash as a phenomena associated with stones. The author comes to the conclusion about the close ethnogenetic and ethnocultural connection between the southern Altaians and the Kyrgyz, which emerged in the Middle Ages.

Terminology of traditional food products in Altai and Kyrgyz languages: lexical-semantic analysis

Konurbayeva R.

Аннотация

The purpose of the study is to compare the vocabulary related to traditional nutrition in the Altai and Kyrgyz languages. It is based on linguistic materials collected by the author among residents of the villages of the Altai Republic: Kaspa, Shyrgaity of the Shebalinsk District; Kyrlyk, Mondur-Sokkon, Kan-Oozy of the Ust-Kansk District; Yabogan, Yelo, Kulady, Bichiktu-Boom, and Kӱpchegen of the Onguday District. Their analysis revealed many lexical and semantic similarities in the Altai and Kyrgyz languages. This is especially noticeable in the names of meat dishes. The coincidences are explained by the identical economic and living conditions of the Altaians and Kyrgyz in the past and present. The formation of the vocabulary of the Altai and Kyrgyz languages took place in a distant era, when their speakers lived in the territory of Altai.

Lexical-semantic parallels in the Kyrgyz and Altai languages (etymology of kinship and the human body)

Akmatalieva Z.

Аннотация

The purpose of the article is to use the example of the etymology of words related to family relationships and the human body to show the general and special in the basic vocabulary of modern Kyrgyz and Altai languages. The author translated 113 words from Kyrgyz and Altai dictionaries. These words were clarified among speakers of the Kyrgyz and Altai languages. The work reveals for the first time different meanings of the basic vocabulary of these languages that were not previously recorded in the dictionary. Its analysis revealed a large number of completely or partially matching words with the same meanings. Some words have meanings specific to each of the languages being compared. Phonological differences were discovered (using some consonants, some vowels and long vowels), as well as slight differences in the use of some words. A hypothesis has been put forward that the features of the lexical fund of the Altai language were formed under the influence of the languages of other peoples of Siberia.

Traditional Turkic Culture in Museum Collections

Сollectors of Gagauz collections of the Russian Museum of Ethnography

Kalashnikova N.

Аннотация

The article analyzes the collecting activities of the Russian Ethnographic Museum employees and amateur local historians of Bessarabia, who have been gathering collections on the Gagauz people ethnography for a century. This fund contains over three hundred material monuments, archival, illustrative and photographic materials on the Gagauz migrants who lived in the territory of Novorossiya (and subsequently in the south of Moldova and in the Odessa Region of Ukraine). Of particular interest is the fact that collecting the materials which characterise the material and spiritual culture of the Gagauz people took place over a long period of time in the same villages. This allows us to trace the dynamics of the development of everyday culture of the Gagauz ethnic group.

High-relief coinage in the Kazan-Tatar jewelry tradition: historical and technical analysis

Donina L.

Аннотация

The article is devoted to identifying the origins and regional features of the technology of high-relief coinage in the Kazan-Tatar jewelry tradition. The main source was the electronic database of Tatar jewelry from museum collections, collected within the framework of the academic project “Jewelry of the Turkic peoples of Eurasia: general and special” (Russian Foundation for Basic Research 2013–2014, No. 13-06-97056). The research was based on a systematic technical and stylistic analysis of traditional jewelry and a detailed synchronous-diachronic examination of Bulgar-Golden Horde and Tatar products with three-dimensional images. Reconstruction of technological techniques related to this type of artistic metal processing made it possible to identify specific features of the formation of decor. The manual method of obtaining a unique relief using punches with a figured striker predominated. The decorations are characterized by the following: two or three-level bas-relief, the absence of a “locking” profile, the principle of “compositing” that underlies the conventionally interpreted floral and plant motifs, geometric orderliness, subject to the laws of the central-radial composition. The completed form of the decoration corresponds to the typical features of “notch chasing”, which is a marker of the Tatar craft tradition: smooth relief and “grain” background. An integrated approach allowed us to conclude that the origins of the existing artistic and figurative system can be traced in artifacts of the Bulgarian and Golden Horde silver of the 11th–14th centuries, made by embossing, stamping, and punching on a matrix. The formation of technological features was influenced by the traditions of high-relief coinage, which received regional development among Kazan silversmiths in the 17th–18th centuries. The specifics of Tatar relief coinage as a whole were formed in the context of Islamic art.

The Kutadgu Bilig: some characteristics and its relation to the idea of rule

Lohlker R.

Аннотация

Mirrors of princes are a specific genre of Islamic literature dedicated to giving advice to rulers, princes, and ministers. There are few mirrors that are composed in verse. The Kutadgu Bilig is modeled on the Persian Shāhnāme of the poet Firdawsi making the Central Asian heritage of wisdom literature at home in Islamic contexts. The text is written in Qarakhanid Turkish; the form is a didactic poem set as a dialogue between the protagonists. In a Weberian sense the program of advice may be analyzed as rational leadership due to the increasing role of shari’a-based rulership. However, there are other elements of legitimacy in this text blurring the clear distictions made by Weber. Hence, we may identify it as a unique, non-European case of legitimation of rulership.

The Kutadgu Bilig are to be read as an attempt to secure the continuation of the Central Asian tradition in a context dominated by Iranian influences into Central Asia. The protagoists of this work are the king, the vizier, the wise man, and the ascet. All these actors are representing virtues needed for successful rulership. At the same time the roles of all the persons associated with the court are discussed even very personal ones like choosing a wife and raising children.

Data on prominent representatives of the Muslim elite of the Khorezm khanate of the 19th century, stored in the photo collection of the Khiva State Museum-Reserve “Ichan-Kala”

Babadzhanov D.

Аннотация

The work reveals the history of the personalities captured in the photograph which is stored in the collections of the Khiva State Museum-Reserve “Ichan-Kala”. At its center is Muhammad Rahim Khan II, the ruler of the Khiva Khanate. Based on historical sources, the author of the article highlights the life and activities of Mukhammad Rakhim Khan II and the palace officials who ruled the Khanate at the end of the 19th century. It is shown that Mukhammad Rakhim Khan II aspired to be the patron of Sharia. He was an enlightened ruler – he supported musical and poetic arts, had polemical conversations with intellectuals, and was fond of writing poems. In 1874, under the patronage of Mukhammad Rakhim Khan II, the first printing house in Central Asia for printing lithographic books was organized in Khorezm. One of the first books published in it were “Khamsa” by Alisher Navoi and “Divan” by the poet Munis.

Microhistory and Culture of everyday

Private life of a Tatar woman of the pre-reform era (on the example of the Menzelinsk Uyezd)

Gabdrafikova L.

Аннотация

The article restores the social and economic status of Tatar women based on documents of Orenburg Mokhammedan Religious Assembly (OMRS), state audit documents, acts of civil status, and journalistic materials of the 19th-early 20th centuries. The Menzelinsk Uyezd had class specifics and was a part of the military (canton) administration. The chronology of the article starts from the late 18th century and continues until the mid–1860s, due to the fact that at the time the state authorities approved certain laws on marriage and family life of Muslims of the Russian Empire: they changed the age of marriage and legalised inter-class marriages, the OMRS began to regulate marital disputes and inheritance cases. The author places the main focus on the marriage and family aspect of private life and includes many archival examples related to the Tatar women of the Menzelinsk Uyezd. Tatar women turned to OMRS when they needed a divorce or permission to remarry, etc. Women were independent subjects of Muslim and civil law, but they always acted with the support of their relatives. Images of Tatar women in the first half of the 19th century presented in publicistic works are a bit static. Russian authors described only the look of a Tatar woman, the cost of her clothes, accessories, etc. The Tatar view was focused on the composition of the woman’s family (to whom she was married, how many children she had). The article presents the biographies of three Tatar women from the Menzelinsy Uyezd: Kurypla Imanaeva, Gulbadar Akhtyamova, and Khasiba Arduanova. Each case illustrates the main trends in everyday life in the first half of the 19th century (military service problems, the cholera epidemic, etc.). The everyday objects played an important role in interpersonal relations and conflicts. At the same time, in the second half of the 19th century, the Tatar society had an ideal of not only a hard-working and religious woman, but also an educated woman.

“NASIHATNAME LI-EHLE ZAMANA” (THE WRITTEN LEGACY OF MAKHRUI MUZAFFARIYA)

Zinnatullina A.

Аннотация

The article is provided to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the outstanding educator, teacher, and poetess Makhrui Gadbelvalievna Muzaffariya (1873–1945). The paper highlights the life and work of the teacher and gives a brief overview of her written heritage. The academic novelty of the study lies in the fact that the article analyzes in the most detail the book by M. Muzaffariya "Nasihatname li-ehli zamana", i.e. "Instructions to Contemporaries", which has not been an object of research until now. The manuscript of the book was prepared on April 21, 1900; it was censored on November 27 of the same year and was published in the printing house of Kazan Imperial University in 1901. The book is not large, it consists of 14 pages. The work was written in the form of instructions and recommendations. It includes three small chapters, which discuss mainly the issues concerning a woman’s life. In the first chapter, the author focuses on the problems of education and upbringing; the second chapter contains recommendations to mothers-in-law and daughters-in-law; and in the third chapter, the duties of husbands and wives are addressed. The book is also notable for the fact that it helps to identify or clarify the pages of M. Muzaffariya’s life, to find out the author's personal view of past events and to present the atmosphere of that time, since the content of the book is supplemented with examples from the educator’s life.
