The article examines the use of modal verbs as direct participants in the implementation of author's intentions in German-language scientific discourse. Based on the material of scientific articles in the humanities, conclusions are drawn that German modal verbs serve as indicators of the author’s assumption with varying degrees of probability, a means of interaction between the author of a scientific text and its addressee and a means of author’s self-expression, and also participate in the organization of scientific thought in the text.
