Abstract
The paper reveals the potential of the diachronic approach to paratext in translation. Both translators’ prefaces, one dating back to the 18th century and the other of the 21st century, demonstrate similarity in structure, concepts, functions and discourse parameters. At the same time, they differ significantly in their cultural and psychological characteristics, which show the values and the linguistic portrait of the translator at each particular stage in history.
