Abstract

The article gives an overview of the ideas about the role of classical mythology in poetry, expressed by Italian authors of the XVIII century and participants of the dispute about romanticism in 1816–1823. Relying on the topos of the prisci poetae, Gravina, Crescimbeni, and Vico presented mythology as a coherent worldview of ancient times. Other authors condemned the use of mythology as a set of ready-made forms to express poetic content, thus anticipating the theses of the Italian Romantics, among whom A. Manzoni, who revived the criticism of mythology from a Christian point of view, occupies a special place.
