The article discusses the problem of the principle of nominating animals of the Bos taurus species in Sanskrit. Nominations are analyzed from the perspective of etymology and onomasiology; cultural data from primary sources (Rigveda, Bhagavata Purana) are provided. Attention is drawn to the importance of distinguishing cows and bulls by gender at the lexical level, associated with the difference in economic functions and with different cultural and mythological connotations, as well as the suitability of an individual for sacrifice.
