The correlation of attributive systems in the lyrics of Dylan Thomas and Ted Hughes (quantitative analysis)

the purpose of this study is to compare the attributive schemes implemented in the poetry of the English writer Ted Hughes and in the poems of his predecessor Dylan Thomas. Dylan Thomas was very popular in the forties of the last century, during the formation of Ted Hughes as an independent poet. We set ourselves the task of identifying similarities and differences in the poetry of the authors, including an attempt to understand the new step taken by T. Hughes in English poetry in the middle of the previous century. The research material was a) selected poems by Dylan Thomas and b) Ted Hughes' early collection “The Hawk in the Rain”. The research is based on the consideration of attributive schemes implemented in the works of the authors. In the poems, all attributes are identified and their type is determined in accordance with the previously tested attributive scheme. The article provides an analysis of quantitative data on the frequency of attributes used by the authors. In addition, we use a number of statistical procedures to achieve our goal, which allow us to assess how evenly the authors use definitions in the texts of their poems. As a result of the study, both pronounced individual features of the authors and significant similarities in the implemented attribution schemes were established, which suggests that Ted Hughes' poetic work developed within the framework of the national poetic tradition, of which Dylan Thomas was a representative, but the author's poetry also has striking individual features.
