A dynamic model of a critic's linguistic personality (based on the example of W.H. Auden's essay "American Poetry")

the article analyzes W.H. Auden’s literary-critical essays, particularly “American Poetry” from The Dyer’s Hand (1962), to reconstruct a dynamic model of his linguistic personality as a critic. The research follows an anthropocentric approach, viewing the text as a reflection of the author’s individual and cultural consciousness. Structural-stylistic, pragmalinguistic, and cultural analysis methods are applied to identify key parameters of Auden’s linguistic and cognitive style, characterized by intellectual reflection, irony, and philosophical depth. Special attention is given to the interaction between linguistic means and value orientations that shape his critical stance and communicative strategy. The study constructs a model of Auden’s linguistic personality as a multi-level structure integrating individual, professional, and cultural components. The findings contribute to a deeper understanding of the linguistic personality’s role in literary criticism and advance interdisciplinary research at the intersection of linguistics, cultural studies, and cognitive stylistics.
