Abstract
this article examines the road motif in L.N. Tolstoy's novel War and Peace and N.S. Leskov's story The Enchanted Wanderer. Tolstoy's novel is rich in motifs, however, the road motif is associated with each character in the novel. The refraction of this theme in the artistic narrative of contemporary writers is of great interest. The article emphasizes the semantic content of the road discourse in both writers. This work contrasts the literal and symbolic meanings of the road image in two Russian prose writers of the 19th century. The article examines the paths-roads of both the main and secondary characters in Tolstoy's epic novel and Leskov's story. The author of the article outlines the state of the study of this issue in modern science, appealing to the works of recent years, which generalized the significance of the road discourse in many Russian writers of the 19th century.
