an entire era of enormous historical significance with its hopes, passions, and worries is reflected in L.N. Tolstoy's book "Anna Karenina". At the same time, this diversity of the novel's content is given unity and integrity, cemented by three main ideas, three interrelated circles of themes and problems, which give grounds to characterize "Anna Karenina" as a family, social, and philosophical novel. The article examines the image of Anna Karenina as a tragic heroine, revealing the traits inherent in heroes of this type: uncompromisingness, sincerity, passion, and the logic of what happens to them. It is this interpretation of the image that helps to understand the ideological meaning of the novel. In addition, the article draws attention to the peculiarity of the novel's composition, its two heroes, as well as the antithesis, which has become the most important technique of the novel's poetics. The tragedy of Anna Karenina in its main content is associated with both the characteristics of her personality and the nature of her love. Tolstoy's novel presents different types of love, and not only those defined in Plato's work as "heavenly love" and "earthly love." The typology of love in Anna Karenina is more complex: here we can speak of at least two types of high love and several types of base love.
