"Liquid Fear": Fear is a Substance and Fear is an Object Metaphors in Contemporary Italian Literature

Abstract

The article investigates the main figurative, semantic and frequency characteristics of expressions belonging to cognitive metaphors Fear is a Substance and Fear is an Object based on the extensive material of Italian fiction corpora. Differences are revealed in the choice of metaphors for describing fear, terror and panic, as well as various aspects of the fear frame. The patterns of creating novel metaphorical expressions associated with the peculiarities of underlying cognitive metaphors are analyzed.
