Abstract
The present article reveals the essence of the concepts «federalism» and «federation» in their correlation and variety of their forms. In this connection in the article is given the characteristic of «politico-legal space» (different types of federation and decentralization) separating the unitary state from confederation. The author also shows the common and special in functioning of various federal systems.
