Аннотация

В ходе русско-турецкой войны 1768-1774 гг. Россия стала первой европейской державой, которая в новое время вторглась на Ближний Восток и даже на короткий период заняла часть его территории: г. Бейрут. События, предшествовавшие штурму и захвату города, а также происходившие во время оккупации, были зафиксированы как местными летописцами, так и российскими офицерами; нашли отражение они и в письмах арабских правителей и донесениях находившихся в Сирии дипломатов. В результате вырисовывается объемная картина общества, впервые столкнувшегося с колониальной экспансией модернизировавшейся Европы. Первая часть представленной статьи посвящена анализу общественно-политической ситуации в регионе в канун появления у сирийских берегов российской эскадры. Отдельное внимание уделяется положению в Бейруте до и во время первого штурма города в июне 1772 г., а также последовавшему изменению баланса сил в Ливане.
