THE PLACE OF ORIGIN OF THE MYTH OF THE RETURN OF THE HERACLEIDAE
Аннотация
This article presents an attempt to find an answer to the question where the myth of the return of the Heracleidae was created. A distinctive feature of this myth is that, unlike other foundation myths, it speaks not of one but of three poleis (Argos, Messenia and Sparta) thus creating a basis for their form of government and giving reasons for their current state of affairs. The said feature cannot but pose difficulties in defining the place of origin of the myth; and that has been reflected in a number of works on the Dorian invasion or those that deal with the history of Argos, Messenia and Sparta. Analysis of the available evidence shows that the myth itself must have originated in Argos. But a number of amendments to its content may have been introduced by the Spartans pursuing certain political goals.

M. P. MUSSORGSKY’S “PICTURES AT AN EXHIBITION” INTERPRETED BY S. T. RICHTER: IN SEARCH OF NEW MEANINGS
Аннотация
The piano cycle “Pictures at an Exhibition” by M. P. Mussorgsky is one of the undisputed peaks of Russian music. Despite the apparent wide coverage of this work in scientific literature, it conceals a lot of mysteries and provides an opportunity for its multiple rethinking. Many outstanding pianists have addressed its interpretation: V. Horowitz, M. Yudina, M. Pletnev, V. Ashkenazy, but the performance of S. T. Richter stands out for its special depth and allows us to discover new meanings in understanding this masterpiece. The peculiarities of Richter’s interpretation of “Pictures at an Exhibition” allow us to form our own view of the figurative content of the cycle. The ideas expressed in this article differ somewhat from the traditional understanding of “Pictures” as musical illustrations to the works of V. Hartmann. The work, created during a difficult period in the composer’s life, is considered in the article as a deeply personal narrative of Mussorgsky about life and death.

RUSSIAN SONG INTONATION IN S. M. LYAPUNOV’S VOCAL LYRICS
Аннотация
The article examines the works of the Russian composer S. M. Lyapunov that he designated as “songs”, namely Op. 42, Op. 51 No. 1, and Op. 69 No. 1. Depending on the texts they are based on (A. Koltsov, A. Korinfsky, and A. Khomyakov), Lyapunov employs different approaches to the expression of intonation and rhythmic patterns in his music. Well aware of the folk musical traditions of several northern regions of Russia, Lyapunov organically incorporates their distinctive features into the style of his “Russian songs”. In the course of the analysis, instances of connections between Lyapunov’s compositions and both folk songs and works of other Russian composers have been identified.

Аннотация
The article examines one of the most vivid piano works of George Crumb, a classic of modern American music, “Gnomic Variations”, in the context of its stylistic features and compositional principles of construction. Variation is one of the leading features of the composer’s style as a whole. In this cycle, this compositional technique is presented multidimensionally and polystylistically, which leads to a special dramatic integrity of the entire series of the theme and 18 variations. Special attention in the analysis is paid to timbre variation, which is carefully worked out by the composer and reflected in detailed score and text instructions. In addition, the end-to-end intonation-thematic arches between the theme and variations are noted as the author’s characteristic technique, which is also found in the composer’s two-volume “Macrocosm”.

THE ROLE OF TROMBONES IN THE ORCHESTRATION OF FRANZ SCHUBERT’S MASS NO. 6
Аннотация
Trombones play a crucial role in the orchestration of the mature works by Franz Schubert. In his final mass in E-flat major, D 950, the composer demonstrates unparalleled inventiveness in the treatment of trombones, endowing them not only with traditional functions of doubling choral parts in fugues and enhancing the overall sound of the orchestra, but also making them a unique means of timbral dramaturgy. This article examines the parts of the three trombones, which participate in all movements of the mass and interact subtly with the choir, woodwinds, and other orchestral instruments. The dominant role of the trombones is revealed in the most dramatic episodes of the mass, where their timbre symbolises the voice of God, the Last Judgment, or inner spiritual struggle. At the same time, the composer unveils the expressiveness of the trombones in sections of a lyrical and pastoral-idyllic nature, where they serve as a delicate means of creating colour.

ANALYSIS OF PRISONERS OF WAR IN RUSSIAN CAPTIVITY DURING THE RUSSO-JAPANESE WAR (1904-1905)
Аннотация
The Russo-Japanese War (1904-1905) was the apogee of bilateral tensions between Russia and Japan in the Far East in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Just over 2,000 people were captured by the Russians. It should be noted that not all prisoners of war were ethnic Japanese: Chinese, Koreans, Europeans, and Americans were also captured by the Russians. Despite the fact that most of the prisoners were Japanese military personnel, there were also representatives of civilian professions in captivity. The paper provides an analysis of the composition of prisoners of war. It is concluded that most of the prisoners were ethnic Japanese, the rest were representatives of other nationalities. It seems interesting to trace the circumstances of the surrender of the above-described ethnic groups, as well as their professional affiliation.

STYLE OF SINGING AND FEATURES OF OPERA IN THE AGE OF ROMANTICISM
Аннотация
19th-century musical Romanticism brought revolutionary changes to opera, sub- stantially transforming the traditional canons of vocal performance. The deep emotional saturation of the works was combined with subtle individualisation of melodic lines, expanding the palette of artistic expressiveness. Romantic composers masterfully integrated folklore motifs into the classical opera structure, creating a unique synthesis of folk art and academic art. Richard Wagner’s innovative solutions in musical drama, the lyrical depth of Franz Schubert’s song cycles, the psychologism of Robert Schumann’s vocal works laid the foundation for modern opera art. The transformations touched upon the harmonic system, piano accompaniment, bel canto technique, forming a fundamentally new aesthetics of the musical performance. Romantic opera enriched the world culture with a unique combination of dramatic intensity, philosophical depth and technical perfection of performing skills.

PERCEPTION AND DISSEMINATION OF RUSSIAN CLASSICAL LITERATURE IN CHINA: FROM ENLIGHTENMENT TO NOSTALGIA
Аннотация
This article explores the dissemination and reception of Russian classical literature in China. Based on a comprehensive literature review and case analysis, it examines the historical dynamics and contemporary trends in the transmission of Russian literature within the Chinese cultural space. The study reveals that at different historical stages, Russian literature in China was perceived as an “instrument of enlightenment”, an “ideological ally”, and a “symbol of nostalgia”. The mechanisms of selective appropriation and localised reproduction of cultural memory by the Chinese audience are analysed in detail. Special attention is given to the impact of digital media on the desacralisation of literary classics and the emergence of new forms of perception among younger generations. The research demonstrates how intercultural communication through literature reflects processes of identity construction and the struggle for cultural memory. A novel approach is proposed for studying literary interactions that transcends the traditional “influence-reception” paradigm.
