Features of eating behavior and satisfaction with the quality of life in patients with morbid obesity after bariatric surgery

The aim of the study was to assess the characteristics of eating behavior and satisfaction with the quality of life in patients with morbid obesity before and after bariatric surgery, to identify patterns of re-gaining weight in the postoperative period. The study included 35 patients (22 women and 13 men) with morbid obesity who underwent bariatric intervention at the age from 27 to 70 years. The patients were observed at the Department of Faculty Therapy and Faculty Surgery of Pavlov First Saint Petersburg State Medical University for three years after the surgery. The study used psychodiagnostic techniques and clinical scales to identify the clinical and psychological characteristics of patients: satisfaction with the quality of life (SF-36, BQL), eating behavior (DEBQ, FEQ), depression and anxiety levels (BDI).The results of the study show that the patients have persistent eating disorders. Before surgical treatment, the external (dependent on external factors) component of eating behavior prevailed; in the postoperative period, the dominance of restrictive eating behavior is observed. The results of the postoperative survey indicate an unsatisfactory perception of the quality of life, while according to the results of the preoperative survey on the psychological component of health, in comparison with the average statistical values, the subjects showed increased indicators.A close relationship was revealed between physiological and emotional hunger in patients with morbid obesity. A tendency was revealed in the absence of a desire to limit oneself in food consumption in patients differentiating hunger as physiological.
