Abstract

The article examines the fictional works of the second half of the 19thand early 20thcentury that deal with the minor members of the clergy and analyzes the assessment of these texts in the church criticism. The fictional images ofdyachoks(vergers) seem more diverse than those of the priests and the deacons. The image of an old verger, bearing strong similarity to that of the «little man» and disappearing by the end of the 19thcentury, holds a special place in these narratives.
