这篇文章研究了《汉书》（“History of the Han”）第一章第二部分中存留至今的四种文献——西汉国家历史的主要来源（公元前 202 年——公元8年）。《汉书》的第一章为公元前202-195年，刘邦是新的刘姓王朝的第一位皇帝，更广为人知的名字是“高祖”。本文研究了汉书文本中保存的文献的分布、内容及其在反映历史现实中的作用，作者在分析来源资料的过程中将其作为章节的独立结构要素加以强调，同时还有“文献信息”、“历史信息”、“历史叙事”和“描述”。这些都是重要的官方文件，具有不同程度的重要性。对《汉书》第一章正文中分布动态的分析，可以确定刘邦在其执政的前一年在行政管理领域的活动增加的事实，当时他所创造的权力从军事压制过渡到和平管理其所建立的国家。
